WIPO International Patent Drafting Training Program

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is accepting applications for the inaugural Spanish edition of the International Patent Drafting Training Program (IPDTP), a professional training program designed to strengthen patent drafting skills.

Applications are open until September 4, 2026, and the program is scheduled to begin on October 7, 2026.

The program was developed by WIPO in collaboration with the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI) and is aimed at professionals and others seeking practical training in patent drafting.

Participants will receive training in areas including claim drafting techniques and methodologies, drafting patent specifications for inventions, analyzing inventions, and making strategic patent filing decisions.

What Does the Program Include?

The training will be conducted in Spanish and consists of three phases followed by a final evaluation.

Phase 1: Drafting Basics

Participants will complete tutor-led online modules covering the fundamentals of drafting patent claims and specifications. The phase includes expert-facilitated discussions and practical exercises.

Phase 2: Workshop

Participants will attend an in-person workshop at WIPO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Patent experts will provide practical training focused on improving drafting skills and understanding patent drafting practices across different jurisdictions.

Phase 3: Mentoring

Participants will receive online mentoring from experienced patent professionals. This phase includes advanced patent drafting exercises tailored to each participant’s technical field and opportunities to receive direct feedback and practical guidance from instructors.

Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a WIPO certificate.

Who Should Apply?

The program is intended for people with a professional or commercial interest in patents and those seeking to strengthen their patent drafting skills across different technical fields.

WIPO particularly encourages applications from:

  • Practicing or prospective patent agents.
  • Staff of technology transfer offices at universities and public research centers.
  • Staff of WIPO Technology and Innovation Support Centers (TISCs).
  • Individuals who regularly assist inventors with obtaining patents.
  • Innovators and researchers.
  • Other individuals interested in developing their patent drafting skills.

Eligibility Requirements

Qualified applicants must have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in law and/or science and technology; or
  • At least one year of professional or research experience in patent drafting or patent prosecution.
