The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert to healthcare professionals and the general public regarding the circulation of counterfeit Proguanil tablets branded as Projeanil and Re-Granil, both labelled as 100 mg B.P.
According to NAFDAC, the products carry NAFDAC Registration Number 04-6433, which actually belongs to a different registered product — Feroglobin B12 Capsules manufactured by Vitabiotics Nigeria. The agency said this discovery raises serious concerns about counterfeit medicines circulating in the Nigerian market.
About Proguanil
Proguanil is an antimalarial medication commonly used in combination with atovaquone (Malarone) or chloroquine to prevent and treat malaria, particularly Plasmodium falciparum infections.
NAFDAC warned that falsified and counterfeit medicines pose significant risks because they have not undergone proper laboratory evaluation, and their quality, safety, and efficacy cannot be guaranteed.
